Why Are N95 And KN95 Masks Different?


It can be difficult to distinguish between N95 and N95 masks with such similar names. What is the difference between N95 and KN95 masks? This handy chart shows the similarities and differences in N95 and KN95 masks.

N95 masks, which are US respirator mask standards, are KN95 mask, which are Chinese mask standards.

What is the difference between N95 and KN95?

Many users are most concerned about the percentage of particles that masks capture. This metric is the same for both N95 and KN95 respirator helmets. Both masks can capture 95% of small particles (0.3um particles)

People will assume that masks cannot capture particles smaller than 0.3um, since N95 and KN95 masks have a 95% sensitivity to 0.3um particles. It would make no sense that masks are effective in preventing virus transmission if that were true.

It is actually much easier to capture particles smaller than 0.33um. 

Differential between N95 and KN95 masks

Both ratings require that masks be tested for salt particle capture efficiency (NaCl) in order to pass. Both masks are tested at 85 L/minute. There are differences between KN95 and N95 that will be highlighted in this article.

KN95 vs. N95 - Differences Highlighted

These differences are usually minor and not of interest to most mask users. Here are some key differences.

1. The Chinese government requires that a KN95 mask manufacturer conduct a special fit test on real people to ensure it is suitable for use. Manufacturers are not required to conduct fit tests under the N95 mask standard.

This does not imply that fit tests don't help. Fit testing is required by many hospitals and companies. 

2. N95 masks have slightly higher pressure requirements while inhaling. They are therefore slightly less breathable than KN95.

3. N95s have slightly higher requirements for pressure drop while exhaling. This should improve breathability.

Some KN95/N95 masks are not certified by the Filtration Standard

Smart Air evaluated 31 N95 masks available on the Chinese market. To determine how many particles were passing through each mask, we used a Met One particle counter and a wind tunnel.

Note that not all mask brands have the same quality when purchasing a KN95/N95. It is important to stick with reputable brands like 3M, which will help you ensure that the mask meets the KN95/N95 standards.

Bottom line: The Difference between N95 and KN95 Masks

Both N95s as well as KN95s can capture 95% of particles. There are minor differences. Only KN95 masks must pass fit tests. N95 masks, on the other hand, have slightly higher breathability standards.

Available N95 and KN95 masks

The availability of KN95 and N95 mask will vary depending on where you live. KN95 masks in the United States are much easier to find than N95 masks. KN95 mask don't meet NIOSH standards so healthcare facilities and hospitals can only use N95 face masks. This is why N95 masks are reserved for healthcare workers and KN95 masks available to the general public. However, this does not make the KN95 masks inferior as long as they're genuine KN95.
