What are the differences between different types of masks?

Medical masks

These disposable masks are also known as surgical masks or loose-fitting ones and are used frequently for surgery. These masks are intended to protect the skin from contact with germ-carrying droplets or sprays. Medical masks also filter out large particles from the air when the wearer inhales.

Tie the ear hooks to the mask at the attachment point for a better fit. Fold the excess material and tuck it under.

N95 Masks

An N95 Mask is a type or respirator. Because it filters out large and small particles from the wearer's lungs, this mask provides more protection than medical masks.

According to the CDC, doctors wearing N95 surgical masks should be avoided by health care workers. Healthcare providers must complete training and pass a fitting exam before using N95 surgical masks. N95 surgical masks can be used once they are worn out. Researchers are working on ways to disinfect them and re-use them.

Both N95 and cloth masks have valves that make it easier to breathe. These masks will not filter out the air that the wearer exhales. Some areas have banned these masks.

Cloth Masks

A cloth mask can trap any droplets of respiratory fluids that are released by coughing, talking, or sneezing. The mask can also be used as a barrier to prevent the wearer from inhaling droplets released by others.

Cloth masks that are made of multiple layers of tightly-woven fabric, such as cotton, are more effective if there is more than one layer. Layered masks work better to stop droplets from entering the mask or escaping.

How to get more out of your mask

You can make cloth or medical masks more effective by fitting them properly to your face.

Your mask should be tightly positioned over your nose, mouth, and cheeks. Warm air should flow through your mask when you exhale. The mask should not have any air under its edges.

Masks with a nose strip that bends help prevent air from leaking out of the top.

Some people choose to wear a disposable mask under their cloth mask. If this is the case, you can press down on the edges of the disposable mask against your face. Avoid layers that are difficult to see, or too thick.

How well you store and use your masks will determine their effectiveness in protecting your skin. These steps will help you remove your mask and to put it on.

  • Wash and clean your face before you apply the mask.
  • Place the mask on your nose, mouth, and chin.
  • You can tie it behind your neck or hang it from your ears. It should be tightened.
  • Wear your mask and don't touch it.
  • Wash your hands after touching your mask inadvertently.
  • If the mask becomes wet or dirty, switch to a new one. Keep the mask covered with a towel until dry.
  • Do not touch the front or the mask.
  • Wash your hands immediately after you have taken off your mask.
  • Wash your cloth masks regularly in the washing machine or by hand. They can be washed with other laundry.

These precautions should be taken.

  • Persons who are unable to or unable breathe should not wear masks.
  • Children under 2 years old should not be wearing masks.
  • Avoid using face masks to distancing.

What about facial protection?

According to the CDC, face shields are not recommended as an alternative to masks due to their insufficient protection. Sometimes, a mask might not be effective. If you need to, you may have to wear a shield that wraps around and below your chin.
